Jean Epstein-Charlie Barber: The Fall Of The House Usher

Jean Epstein was a representative of French avant-garde cinema, and one of his most famous films was The Fall of the House of Usher (1928), based on the short story by Edgar Allen Poe. A truly experimental film in its day, is accompanied by a contemporary English composer, Charlie Barber. What makes this composition really fascinating is that Debussy worked on an opera on this theme from 1908 until his death, and Barber used surviving fragments of those themes and motifs to compose his incidental music. The piece is available in three different instrumentations, one of which, a soprano saxophone and string quartet arrangement, will be performed. This, the Hungarian premiere, will be accompanied by the composer himself, Charlie Barber, with whom we will be holding a short discussion before the concert.
